Dulux Colour Forecast 2027: Our Take for Christchurch Homes

Each year Dulux releases its colour forecast for the year ahead, and the 2027 edition is built around a theme of connection and authenticity through colour. As a Dulux Accredited business, we pay close attention. Not to chase trends for their own sake, but because a forecast is a useful window into what people are drawn to, and we get to see how those colours behave once they're on a real wall.

The forecast comes from the Dulux colour team here in New Zealand, drawing on global and local research, and it's organised into three palettes: Sensory, Play and Treasure. Here's each one, and how we'd think about using it in a Christchurch home.

TL;DR

  • The 2027 forecast has three palettes: Sensory (calm botanical greens and earthy neutrals), Play (bright, unexpected pairings) and Treasure (rich berry, gold and teal).
  • Sensory is the easiest to live with and suits most homes. Play and Treasure shine as feature walls, doors and single rooms, and deeper Treasure tones usually need extra coats or the right primer.
  • Colours always look different on your own walls, so test samples in your own light before you commit.

Sensory: Calm, Layered and Easy to Live With

Dulux describes Sensory as a soft, tonal palette built around comfort and stillness. It leans on botanical greens such as Puketī Forest, Willow Flat and Grahams Beach, balanced by warm neutrals like Darfield and Mason Bay Double, a gentle muted blue in Puhoi, and deep browns such as Tongariro and Waipoua Forest.

Our take: this is the palette most homes could wear well. Soft greens and warm neutrals sit naturally alongside the timber trim, high ceilings and original features of a Christchurch villa, and they're just as comfortable in a newer, lighter home. It's also the easiest palette to carry through a whole-house repaint, because the tones relate to each other and give you a calm flow from room to room. The deeper browns work well as an anchor in a study or on a feature wall.

Play: Bright, Optimistic and Best Used With Intention

Play is the energetic one. Gentle pastels such as Silverstream and Havelock Half are lifted by accents of spearmint, berry and vivid orange, alongside layered blues like Balaena Bay and Birdlings Flat. A rich warm brown, Whakapapa, keeps it grounded.

Our take: Play is at its best in small, deliberate doses. A front door, a kids' room, a laundry, a hallway or a single feature wall is where a playful colour earns its place, with a calm base colour around it. The deep brown is the useful trick here: it gives all that brightness somewhere to rest, so the room feels confident rather than busy.

Treasure: Rich, Dramatic and Confident

Treasure is the boldest of the three, with berry shades like Omaui and Danseys Pass, golds and yellows such as Dipton and Arrow River, a deep Precision, a striking teal in Plunge and an energising coral-pink in Bluff Hill.

Our take: drama works best when it's given the right room. A dining room, study or snug, or a single feature wall in a room with plenty of natural light, suits these colours far better than spreading them through a whole house. One practical point: going from a light colour to a rich, saturated one usually takes extra coats or the right primer to get an even finish, and deep colours are less forgiving of poor preparation. That's worth allowing for in the plan and the budget from the start.

Turning a Forecast Into Your Colours

A forecast is a direction, not a shopping list. A few things make the difference between a colour you admire in a photo and one you love at home:

  • Start with what's staying. Flooring, cabinetry and major furniture aren't changing, so choose colours that work with them first.
  • Test in your own light. Dulux itself recommends testing at home with sample pots and A4 swatches, and we'd add to that: put a large sample on the actual wall and look at it in the morning, afternoon and evening.
  • Pick one hero palette, not three. Borrow the mood of one palette rather than mixing all of them, and let one or two colours do the talking.
  • Match the finish to the room. Sheen changes how a colour reads as much as the colour itself. Our decorative finishes guide covers feature walls and other ways to use colour.

It also helps to know that Dulux Colours of New Zealand are designed to be made with Dulux pigments in Wash&Wear, which happens to be the interior product we quote as standard.

Free Colour Consultation on Full Home Repaints

Full home interior repaints with David Robertson Decorators include a free colour consultation with a Dulux colour consultant, tailored to your home's architecture, lighting and personal style. It's the best place to take any of these ideas and turn them into the right specific colours for your rooms. For single-room or partial repaints, we're still happy to offer colour guidance as part of your estimate. You can read more in How to Choose the Right Paint Colours.

Common Questions About the Colour Forecast

Do I have to follow the forecast?

Not at all. It's inspiration, and the best colour for your home is one you'll enjoy living with long after the trend has moved on. If you're planning to sell, a calm base with one confident feature moment tends to strike the right balance.

Can these colours be used outside?

Some can, but exterior colour choice has extra considerations, including sun exposure, cladding type and how dark colours behave on the wall. It's worth a separate conversation.

Sensory is the most natural

Sensory is the most natural fit for a villa, and Treasure can look striking in a dining room or study with good ceilings and trim. Every home is different, which is exactly what testing samples is for. Our guide to painting character homes goes further.

Will a bold colour cost more?

Sometimes, since extra coats or a primer add time. It's all worked out in your written estimate up front, so there are no surprises.

Conclusion

The Dulux 2027 forecast is a calm-to-bold spectrum: Sensory for comfort, Play for optimism and Treasure for drama. Whichever direction pulls you, the principle is the same. Choose colours that suit your light and your home, test them properly on your own walls, and let one confident colour do the work rather than trying to use everything at once.

At David Robertson Decorators, we've been helping Christchurch homeowners turn colour ideas into finished rooms since 1991, and we're a Dulux Accredited business, so we love this part of the job. If you're ready to talk colour for your own home, the next step is simple.
